Teen Family Therapy

If you’re like most parents, you’ve probably gone through a range of emotions when you discover your teen is struggling with a mental health disorder or substance abuse. You may wonder how it happened, and if there’s anything you can do to help. Family therapy can be an extremely effective way to address the issues your family is facing. Teen family therapy is a critical aspect of our treatment programs, as the whole family must work together to uncover the root cause of your child’s issues, and learn how to recover as a unit.

Understanding Teen Family Therapy

What is Teen Family Therapy?

Teen family therapy is a type of treatment that focuses on understanding and resolving underlying problems within the family dynamic. It helps teens, parents, siblings, and other family members explore the issues that are causing your teen distress, learn new communication strategies, and develop healthier relationships with one another. It will also allow the family to work together to improve their child’s health and well-being.

The Role of Family in Teen Recovery

Family members play a key role in helping their teenage loved one recover from addiction or mental health disorders. Through family therapy, families can learn how to best provide support and guidance for their teen, while also encouraging them to take ownership of their problems. By learning how to not enable their teen, there is a greater chance of long-term recovery. Family therapy can also help teens feel more connected with their family and provide them with the opportunity to share their feelings openly and honestly.

What to Expect in Teen Family Therapy

How Does Family Therapy for Teens Work?

Family therapy for teens involves weekly meetings with a therapist who helps guide the conversation. During these sessions, family members will have the opportunity to express their feelings, discuss potential solutions to their issues, and learn how they can better support one another. Therapists will focus on communication strategies and healthy coping skills to help family members navigate difficult conversations and better understand one another’s perspectives.
At Key Healthcare, each week we will also ask parents questions related to their teen’s behavior and functioning outside of our treatment program. While family counseling for teenagers can be challenging, it’s important for parents to cooperate as much as they can for teen’s to be successful while undergoing treatment.
