Teenage Trauma
Goals of Teen Trauma Treatment
IMPROVED COPING SKILLS
Learning how to cope with trauma is a primary goal of teen trauma treatment. This may include teaching teens healthy ways to express their emotions, manage stress, practice relaxation techniques, and develop resilience.
TREATMENT OF DUAL DIAGNOSIS SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Many teens who experience trauma also develop substance abuse issues. Trauma treatment includes helping the teen identify and address their addiction so they can begin a path to recovery.
ASSIST IN REGAINING CONTROL
Many teens who have experienced trauma feel out of control and helpless. Treatment can help them regain control over their lives by developing problem-solving skills and strategies to manage their feelings.
DIVERT FOCUS FROM PAST EVENT TO PRESENT
Trauma treatment helps teens to focus on the present instead of continually returning to the past traumatic event. This can help them gain perspective and understanding to help them move forward.
ELIMINATION OF TRAUMA SYMPTOMS
Teens who experience trauma may have physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms. Trauma treatment helps teens to understand their symptoms and learn how to manage them.
ACCEPTANCE OF THE PAST EVENT
Trauma treatment can help teens to accept the past trauma for what is was, work through their emotions related to the trauma and find closure they need to move forward.
