LGBTQ+ Mental Health Treatment & Gender Support in Los Angeles

If your teen identifies as LGBTQ+, it's important to ensure that they have access to appropriate mental health treatment and support. Many teens who identify as LGBTQ+ lack the necessary resources and support from their families and communities to deal with their struggles. This can lead to poor mental health outcomes and substance abuse. Fortunately, there are many programs that offer support for LGBTQ+ teens. These resources can help improve your teen's mental health and wellbeing.

Understanding LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health

LGBTQ+ Teen Mental Health

As a parent, it's important to be aware of the unique mental health needs of your LGBTQ+ teen. Studies have shown that LGBTQ+ youth are at an increased risk for mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and suicide. Many LGBTQ+ teens face discrimination and rejection from their families, friends, and communities. This can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Additionally, LGBTQ+ teens are often subjected to bullying and harassment. All of these factors can contribute to poor mental health outcomes.

LGBTQ+ Teen Suicide

LGBTQ+ teens are also at an increased risk for suicide. In fact, studies have shown that LGBTQ+ adolescents are three times more likely to attempt suicide than their non-LGBTQ counterparts. There are a number of factors that contribute to this increased risk including bullying, rejection, and struggles with sexuality and gender identity acceptance.

Understanding Youth Gender Dysphoria

Gender Dysphoria in Teens

Some teenagers may experience gender dysphoria, or dissatisfaction/disconnect with their biological sex, during puberty. For most, this is a passing phase that resolved itself without intervention. However, for some teens, gender dysphoria persists and can lead to a teenage gender identity crisis. Many teens who identify as transgender or gender non-conforming struggle with gender dysphoria.

Transgender Youth Mental Health

Transgender youth have one of the highest rates of mental health issues of any group. Nearly half of transgender youth will have at least one episode of major depression in their lifetimes, and transgender youth are nearly nine times as likely as cisgender youth to attempt suicide. Transgender teens are also more likely to experience homelessness, mental health issues, and substance abuse.
